Description
A roughout boot in dark oak — the leather turned flesh-side out, so the working surface is nap rather than grain.
The roughout comes from Charles F. Stead, and the combination of Goodyear-welt construction with time-proven leather is what makes the boot highly durable and water-resistant enough for everyday use. It is built on the Leo last with a 360º flat welt, lined in full-grain kip leather, and closed with antique brass eyelets and speed hooks. Vegetable-tanned leather forms the insole, welt and midsole, cork filler sits over a steel shank, and full-grain leather heel counters hold the shape at the back. The outsole is a Vibram Christy.
Roughout is the most forgiving surface a boot can have: it does not scuff so much as change texture, and dark oak hides the difference better than a pale nap would. On a Christy wedge it is soft underfoot and informal enough for daily wear. This is the pair to reach for when you are not thinking about your boots at all.
