Saddle Tan Minerva Plain Toe Boot
Description
Saddle tan on the plain toe pattern, built around a vegetable-tanned Italian leather that will not stay the colour it arrived in.
The Minerva comes from the Badalassi Carlo tannery, a boutique Italian house specialising in vegetable tanning. The hides go into a Bottali — a large rotating barrel that keeps the organic tanning substances in contact with the article — and a complete cycle can take 30 to 35 days. What comes out has transparency and depth rather than a flat surface, with prominent vamp breaks and real variation of colour; on a light vegetable-tanned article, some areas will simply run darker. Under it, the Leo last gives the pattern exceptional support, with Goodyear-welt construction, a 360º split-reverse welt, full-grain kip leather lining, antique brass eyelets and speed hooks, cork filler over a steel shank and a full-grain leather heel counter. Insole, welt, midsole and outsole are all vegetable-tanned leather.
The all-leather bottom makes this the dressier boot here, and the tone is warm enough to sit under almost anything. It marks early and unevenly. If that reads as damage to you, buy a darker pair; if it reads as history, this is the one.
